Filósofo francés
Nació el 15 de octubre de 1926 en Poitiers. Cursó estudios de filosofía occidental y psicología en la École Normale Supérieure de París. En los años 60, dirigió los departamentos de filosofía de las Universidades de Clermont-Ferrand y Vincennes. Participó junto con los estudiantes en las protestas y manifestaciones de mayo del 68 y, posteriormente, formó parte de una comisión para la defensa de la vida y de los derechos de los inmigrantes. En el año 1970 fue profesor de Historia de los Sistemas de Pensamiento. Las principales influencias en su pensamiento fueron los filósofos alemanes Friedrich Nietzsche y Martin Heidegger. Sus estudios pusieron en tela de juicio la influencia del filósofo político alemán Karl Marx y del psicoanalista austriaco Sigmund Freud. Foucault exploró los modelos cambiantes de poder dentro de la sociedad y cómo el poder se relaciona con la persona. Estudió las reglas que gobiernan las afirmaciones que pueden ser tomadas como verdaderas o falsas en distintos momentos de la historia, que las ideas básicas que la gente considera verdades permanentes sobre la naturaleza humana y la sociedad cambian a lo largo de la historia. También cómo las prácticas diarias permiten a la gente definir sus identidades y sistematizar el conocimiento; los hechos pueden ser entendidos como productos de la naturaleza, del esfuerzo humano o de Dios. Mantenía que la concepción de las cosas tiene sus ventajas y sus peligros. El pensamiento de Foucault se desarrolló en tres etapas. La primera, en Locura y civilización (1960), que escribió mientras era lector en la Universidad de Uppsala, en Suecia, Foucault estudia, a través de la modificación del concepto de “locura” y de la oposición entre razón y locura que se establece a partir del siglo XVII, la necesidad que tienen todas las culturas de definir lo que las limita, es decir, lo que queda fuera de ellas mismas. En su segunda etapa escribió En Las palabras y las cosas (1966), que lleva como subtítulo Arqueología de las ciencias humanas, Foucault dice que todas las ciencias que tienen como objeto el ser humano (la biología, la psicología, la lingüística, la economía, etc.) son el producto de mutaciones históricas que reorganizan el saber anterior, recreando un conjunto epistemológico que define en todos los dominios los límites y las condiciones de su desarrollo.
La última etapa de Foucault empezó con la publicación de Vigilar y castigar, en 1975. Se preguntaba en este ensayo si el encarcelamiento es un castigo más humano que la tortura, pero se ocupa más de la forma en que la sociedad ordena y controla a los individuos adiestrando sus cuerpos; por ejemplo, un entrenamiento básico puede disciplinar y preparar a una persona para ser un soldado. Los últimos tres libros de Foucault -Historia de la sexualidad, Volumen I: Introducción (1976), El uso del placer (1984) y La preocupación de sí mismo (1984)- son parte de una truncada historia de la sexualidad. En estos libros, Foucault rastrea las etapas por las que la gente ha llegado a comprenderse a sí misma en las sociedades occidentales como seres sexuales, y relaciona el concepto sexual que cada uno tiene de sí mismo con la vida moral y ética del individuo. Foucault opina que la sociedad occidental ha desarrollado un nuevo tipo de poder, (bio-poder), un nuevo sistema de control que los conceptos tradicionales de autoridad son incapaces de entender y criticar. En vez de ser represivo, este nuevo poder realza la vida. Foucault, que murió en París en 1984, pasará sin duda a la historia como el filósofo francés más importante e influyente tras la muerte de Sartre.
